Prolong your swimming season
Cover your pool’s surface with a solar blanket. The biggest reason our pools get cold is evaporation. Heat rises and our highveld sun quickly causes the warmer water that rose to the surface to evaporate. A solar blanket acts as a protective heat absorbing shield and keeps your pool warmer for longer.
An interesting solution is a liquid solar pool cover. This biodegradable cover is safe to swim in and creates an invisible shield that covers the surface of the pool. But be advised that this won’t work if your pool is in a windy area as the wind can break the liquid seal.
Talking about wind, your pool’s temperature goes down on a windy day as well, it’s like stirring the water in your bathtub, as you stir the water, some of the heat escapes. Creating a windproof enclosure for your pool can be beneficial, for more information look at The Pool Heating Studio in Cape Town:
Solar panels are a good strategy to get your pool good and warm on colder days. These specialised panels can be installed on your roof, and it works like this: your pool water is pumped through the tubes in the panels and warms up as it flows through the panels on the roof. The warm water makes its way back into your pool and can raise the temperature with up to six degrees. Solar panels are the most popular heating solution and if you have a ball valve installed, the system can be locked down in the summer when it’s not needed.
Another way to warm up your pool is with a pool heat pump. This is the fastest way to heat your pool. It uses pressure pumps to heat gas, which in turn heats the water running though the heat pump. The gas is then cooled by a big fan, so ventilation is VERY important.
We always recommend installing a solar blanket when fitting solar panels or a heat pump. This way, your pool stays warm during sunny days as well as cloudy days and nights.
