Chlorine – Hero or Zero

Is chlorine the hero that sanitize and keep the pool clear? Or, is it the villian causing skin irritations and burning eyes? But what is chlorine?

In its natural state, chlorine is a yellow-green gas at room temperature and pressure. However, it can be readily converted into a liquid or solid form through compression or cooling. Chlorine is widely known for its disinfectant properties and is commonly used to sanitize water in various applications, including swimming pools, drinking water treatment, and wastewater treatment. C hlorine plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and cleanliness of water in various applications, from swimming pools to drinking water supplies, by effectively disinfecting and oxidizing contaminants.

Some key characteristics of Chlorine is the following:

Disinfectant: Chlorine is highly effective at killing bacteria, viruses, and other harmful microorganisms present in water. It disrupts the structure of microorganisms, rendering them unable to function and reproduce.

Oxidant: Chlorine reacts with and break down organic compounds, contaminants, and impurities in water. This process eliminates organic matter and maintains water clarity. This process is known as oxidation.

Forms: Chlorine is often used in different chemical forms. The most common forms include:

    • Chlorine gas: Used in large-scale water treatment facilities but requires careful handling due to its toxic nature.

    • Sodium hypochlorite: Also known as liquid bleach, it is commonly used for household disinfection and in swimming pools.

    • Calcium hypochlorite: Available in powder or granular form, it is frequently used for disinfecting swimming pool water and as a shock treatment.

    • Dichlor and Trichlor: These are stabilized chlorine compounds commonly used as sanitisers and disinfectants in swimming pools and spas.

pH Sensitivity: The effectiveness of chlorine as a disinfectant is influenced by the pH level of the water. Chlorine is most effective at a pH level between 7.2 and 7.8. Outside this range, its effectiveness diminishes, and adjustments may be needed.

Safety: While chlorine is an effective disinfectant, it must be handled and used with care due to its toxic nature. Exposure to high concentrations of chlorine gas can be harmful to health, causing respiratory irritation, lung damage, and other health issues.
